Hydrogen Peroxide Shelf Life and Effectiveness

Hydrogen peroxide, like many household chemicals, can expire. If youve ever poured hydrogen peroxide solution onto a cut and didnt experience the expected fizz, its likely your bottle of hydrogen peroxide has become a bottle of plain water. The 3-percent hydrogen peroxide solution you can buy for use as a disinfectant typically has a shelf life of at least a year and up to three years if the bottle is unopened. Once you break the seal, the hydrogen peroxide will last 30 to 45 days at peak effectiveness, with about six months of useful activity. As soon as you expose the peroxide solution to air, it starts to react to form water. Also, if you contaminate the bottle—such as by dipping a swab or finger into it—you can expect the effectiveness of the remaining liquid to be compromised. So, if you have a bottle of hydrogen peroxide that has been sitting in your medicine cabinet for a few years, it would be a good idea to replace it. If youve opened the bottle at any point, assume the liquid has outlived its usefulness. Why Peroxide Bubbles Whether your bottle of peroxide is open or not, its always decomposing into water and oxygen. The equation is: 2 H2O2 → 2 H2O O2(g) The bubbles that form in the reaction come from oxygen gas. Ordinarily, the reaction proceeds so slowly you cant perceive it. When you pour hydrogen peroxide onto a cut or any of several surfaces, the reaction proceeds much more quickly because a catalyst is present. Catalysts that speed the decomposition reaction include transition metals, such as iron in the blood  and the enzyme catalase. Catalase is found in nearly all living organisms, including humans and bacteria, where it acts to protect cells from peroxide by quickly deactivating it. Peroxide is naturally produced in cells and needs to be neutralized before it can cause oxidative damage. When you pour peroxide on a cut, both healthy tissue and microbes are killed, but the damage to your tissue mends. Test to See If It Is Still Good If youre not sure whether that bottle of peroxide is worth using, theres a safe and easy way to test it. Splash a bit into a sink. If it fizzes, its still good. If you dont get a fizz, its time to replace the bottle. Tips to Extend the Peroxides Life Dont open the new container until youre ready to use it and dont transfer it to a clear container. In addition to air, light also reacts with peroxide and causes it to change. You can help extend the shelf life of your hydrogen peroxide by storing it in a cool location, since heat accelerates the rate of chemical reactions, including the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

Middle School Is Not The Easiest Time - 1909 Words

Gnome Good I don’t think that I will ever be able to forget middle school. For me, middle school was not the easiest time in my life. I had just moved to a new town and I wasn’t the best at making friends. Trying to form new friendships, while also starting middle school was not an easy task. I had just started the sixth grade at a new school, with new faces, new classrooms, and a new teacher. I had a typical schedule for a sixth grader, nothing too difficult. In her TED Talk The Power of Yet, Dweck states, â€Å"if you get a failing grade, you think, I’m nothing, I’m nowhere†. I n other words, Dweck believes that students that do not receive the grade they want, immediately consider themselves failures. The concept of failure is prominent in an excerpt from On Writing, by Stephen King, a popular writer from Maine. King states, â€Å"Now that I was away from the administrative offices of Lisbon High, I felt able to muster a little honesty. I told Mr. Gould that I didn’t know much about sports†. In making this statement, King leads us to believe that he is afraid of failing. Similar to Dweck’s idea of fixed mindset, King presents a fixed mindset towards his ability to write about sports. King is afraid of failure and is, therefore, afraid of letting Mr. Gould down. Even as an 11-year-old in middle school, I struggled with the idea of failing, and I think that is why I was so afraid to have my narrative critiqued. I could not accept failure. â€Å"Interesting†, she said as she read my story. â€Å"This makes absolutely no sense; you have gone from one place to another without any explanation as to how your characters got there.† Laughing, she remarked, â€Å"Courtney, this is gnome good!† My face got hot and I raged with anger, in that moment, I felt complete hatred for my English teacher. Pregnancy Alcohol Essay Example For Students

Pregnancy Alcohol Essay SUBSTANCE USES AND PREGNANCYTHE MULTIPLE WAYS OF DISSEMINATING INFORMATIONJanuary 1989 the results of a study conducted by Ann Pytkowicz Streissguth were published in the Journal of Developmental Psychology. The study investigated the relationship of maternal use of drugs, alcohol and/or cigarettes during pregnancy on the IQ of her child at the age of four years. Newsweek and Scientific News also print articles later that year reporting the effects of maternal use of alcohol and drugs on the infant. They also looked at the effects of cigarette smoke on the fetus. Although the articles dealt with the same topic using information reported in the original study they differed in how they presented that information to their readers. All three publications varied use of methodology, use of scientific findings, and the presentation of the conclusion to meet the informational needs of their audiences. IQ at Age 4 in Relationship Maternal Alcohol Use and Smoking during pregnancy was written by the group of researchers that group participated in a study lead by Ann Streissguth. This the original article is the actual research paper which was presented by the group. The paper tells how an original group of over fifteen hundred pregnant women was reduced to a select group of under five hundred. They explain how the condition of the infant at birth was not a factor in the study. It was their goal to define the long term effect of substance use during pregnancy. Further information shares how they followed the children in a longitudinal study at eight months, eighteen months, and four years. The group looked at a multitude of factors which included the toddlers learning abilities and the childs IQ at the age of four. Of the three articles this one relies most on the use of methodology, scientific findings and presentation conclusion. In their paper they use the standard method of report ing research data. An abstract at the beginning of the paper gives a good summary of the content to follow. They present their hypothesis, do a literature review, define the group selection, explain the method of data collection, identify variables, analyze that data, present their results, discuss the findings and give references. As most research papers it counts heavily on use of numbers and scientific data to support any statement it makes about the subject. This is apparent in the use of many graphs and tables of data. The group concludes that use of such substance during pregnancy does have a long term effect on the child. The researchers warn that their study was limited and therefore should not be the rule. They advise Practitioners to caution Pregnant women not to take any chance with the unborn fetus. This is because of the effects that can occur with different amounts of consumption during various stages of pregnancy. Published in the Journal of Developmental Psychology t he audience of the article would most likely be others in the field of Psychology or Medicine. Their need would be to know, in depth, all aspects of the study. Only with such complete information could they apply this knowledge in their practices. Therefore, this format would be the expectation of those readers. The Science News article reaches a broader group of professionals in related fields of science. Drinking While Pregnant Risks Childs IQ was written by B. Bower. The author reports on the same study described in the first article. This article was short and simple. It was written to inform its readers that the study existed and brief them on its findings. Bower includes enough data to discuss the validity of the study but relies more on a verbal explanation of the outcome to convey the message. Using an informative approach Bower did not draw any conclusion, but merely related the findings of the study. However by including the studies source of original publication Bower allows the inquisitive reader to seek more information if they want. .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 , .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .postImageUrl , .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 , .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:hover , .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:visited , .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:active { border:0!important; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:active , .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6 .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0169f02f310012f7fa1ab90e0a903ee6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Blue Whale EssayC. The Significance of Word

The Significance of Word-Painting in John Keatsâ„ ¢ Poetry Essay Keats was mostly in the calm bosom of nature, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, it reveals he beauty of nature to him so that he is named as devotee of nature to beauty. His writings reflect some splendor of the natural world as he saw or dreamed it to be. Unlike William Wordsmith, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lord Byron and Percy Abysses Shelley, Keats remained absolutely untouched by revolutionary theories for the regeneration Of mankind. He endeavored to escape from reality in order to take refuge in the realm of imagination. This escape and remaining in imagination helped him to write uniquely. One Of the very beautiful techniques used by him is his word-painting. Word-painting alternates between description and reflection in poetry, whereas in prose it alternates between description and narration. Keats is one of the greatest word-painters in English poetry. Each picture that he gives is remarkable tort its vividness and minuteness tot details. His images are concrete and are impressed upon our minds. We will write a custom essay on The Significance of Word-Painting in John Keatsâ„ ¢ Poetry specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In the Ode to Autumn, for instance, autumn has been pictured in the concrete figures tooth reaper, the winnower, the gleaner etc. The readers are aware that poetry and painting are two separate branches of art but in the case of Keats they are united. Even though Horace, the leading Roman lyric poet, was the first person who believed that Poetry is like painting: one piece takes your fancy it you stand close to it, another if you keep at some distance Keats makes it unique by using term of keepsakes and word-painting in his poetry. He mixes two arts and makes an everlasting art. By mixing two arts he tries to discuss the relationships between the soul, eternity, nature, and art. His poetic representation off painting or sculpture in words Which describes both motion found in a stationary artwork ND underlying motives of characters, makes his word-painting unique and different from the traditional use Of word-painting. For example in Ode on a Grecian urn Keats replaces actions with a series of questions and focuses only on external attributes Of the characters. Sing the new and unique word-painting makes his works beautiful and everlasting. The beauty and vividness of his poetry as a painted picture gives an everlasting joy to his readers and confirms his famous line A thing of beauty is joy forever. Keats uses so many visual and colorful images in his poetry. He draws the pictures by arranging words. Ode on a Grecian urn as one of his six odes clearly represents using of word-painting in his poetry. Ode is written on an urn which has the painting of two lovers in flight and pursuit, a pastoral piper under spring foliage, and quiet procession Of priest, town people, resemble parts of various vases, sculptures, and paintings. All these images exist in Keats imagination and he by the help Of this great imagination creates lots of images just by using words. He paints the words professionally even if the reader closes his eyes; yet the poetry is visible for him. Keats also has the gift of giving life to inanimate objects while picturing them. In The Eve of SST. Agnes he represents the statues of kings and queens as feeling cold, and refers to the carved angels as eager-eyed and as staring. The statues and carving have been given life. Drawing pictures, impressing images upon readers mind, using so many colors, giving life to inanimate object like a painter, makes Keats one of the greatest romantic poets in English. Using artistic points makes him a unique poet who mixed painting and poetry and created a new term in poetry as word-painting.
